The United States is preparing for a comprehensive change in passport design. Foreign Minister Marco Rubio introduced the new U.S. passport on September 29, 2026, announcing the planned innovations in the document's design and application processes.
The new passport, expected to be introduced in 2028, stands out with a design that highlights American history and national symbols. The new design will feature a larger, more prominent gold-colored Great Seal, while passport pages will include images depicting significant events from U.S. history.
The Eagle Design Takes Center Stage in the Passport
One of the most striking features of the new passport will be an eagle design that gives the impression of moving as the pages are turned. The special design aims to create an image reminiscent of the eagle's flight when turning the passport pages.
Passport pages will depict significant events in U.S. history, from the nation's founding and westward expansion to the flag raising at Iwo Jima and space missions.
Rubio said the new passport is not just a travel document, but also a symbol representing American citizenship and the nation's history.
Passport Applications Will Be Made Online
The innovations will not be limited to passport design alone. The U.S. administration aims to simplify the application process as well.
According to Rubio's statement, a new system is being developed so that Americans can submit their first passport applications entirely online. Applicants will be able to take and upload photos with their phones, make payments over the internet, and track the status of their applications.
The statement said that by the end of 2027, the majority of Americans are expected to be able to apply for a passport or passport card through the new system.
What Will Current Passport Holders Do?
Announcing the new design does not mean that existing passports will become invalid. Current passport holders were told that as long as their documents are not damaged and have not expired, they can continue to use their existing passports.
The new passports are planned to be issued as a single type in a 38‑page booklet. This aims to replace the previously offered passport options that had varying page counts with one standard format.
While the new design is expected to be launched in 2028, the online application system is planned to be introduced earlier.
