Not Motherhood, but Savagery: Took the Life of an 11-Month-Old Son

In the United States, a custody dispute between mother and father ended in a horrific murder. 36‑year‑old Madeline Veronique Daly, who believed her son would be taken from her, admitted in court that she killed her 11‑month‑old baby Basil by striking him on the head. Daly faces a life sentence.

The incident reportedly occurred after a custody dispute that began last September between Daly and the baby's father. According to allegations, Daly left Wyoming with her son Basil. The mother, traveling more than a thousand kilometres in a caravan, went to New Mexico and stayed there for a while with the baby.

Investigators located Daly in December. Police teams launched an operation around the caravan where the mother and baby were found. However, before the teams could intervene, Daly shot her 11‑month‑old son in the head with a 9‑mm handgun.

It was reported that after the murder Daly tried to point the same gun at herself, but police intervention stopped her. The statement given by the arrested woman in custody became one of the most striking details of the investigation.

It was reported that Daly said she justified her decision to kill her son and was not remorseful. The woman, who stated that she wanted the baby's father and family to never see Basil again, was said to have acted with that mindset.

Daly, who was brought to court, pleaded guilty to the murder charge by admitting she killed her son. While the final verdict has not yet been announced, it was noted that the 36‑year‑old could be sentenced to life in prison.
