The Donald Trump administration announced once again its stance on gender policies, following the shifting balances after the country's elections, through a post on the White House's official X account. The statement noted that the U.S. government's official policy recognizes only two genders. The post read, 'The official policy of the United States government is that only two genders exist: male and female.'

It Depends on the Decision Trump Signed in 2025

The White House statement is linked to Presidential Memorandum No. 14168, signed by Donald Trump on the day he took office, January 20, 2025. The memorandum, titled 'Protect Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Reestablish Biological Reality in the Federal Government,' foresees the federal administration recognizing only two biological sexes: male and female.

Within the memorandum, biological sex and gender identity were treated as distinct concepts. Federal agencies were instructed to base official documents and practices on the definitions of male and female.

Implementation Began in Federal Agencies

Following the Trump administration's decision, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released a new guide on biological sex definitions on February 19, 2025. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) also updated its policies on April 2, 2025, to be based on the two biological sexes.

The White House's latest post brought the Trump administration's federal policy on this issue back to the public agenda.
