Brooklyn Metro Tragedy: Man Dies After Bag Gets Stuck on Door

At the Utica Avenue subway station in Brooklyn, New York, on Monday evening, 57‑year‑old Yaw Boahene died when a shopping bag became wedged in the doors of a moving train.

Police said that the bag Boahene was carrying became trapped between the closing doors either when he boarded the northbound A train or when he disembarked. After the train began moving, Boahene was pulled toward the tracks.

Teams were dispatched to the scene.

Emergency crews arrived at the Utica Avenue station shortly after a 5:40 p.m. call on Monday. Boahene was found on the tracks, and it was determined that he had died at the scene.

Police found no indication of a crime.

The New York Police Department announced that no criminal element was found in the incident. In initial statements, police said Boahene's backpack had become wedged in the door, but later corrected that the item was a shopping bag.

A Similar Death Had Occurred in 2022

A similar death occurred in the New York subway in October 2022. A 20‑year‑old man from New Jersey lost his life when his clothing and backpack got caught on a door while boarding train 1 at Columbus Circle station.
