Byron Donalds became Florida's first Black governor.
An unprecedented event occurred in the U.S. midterm elections. Republican Byron Donalds defeated Democrat David Jolly to become Florida's first Black governor.

Byron Donalds, the Republican Party candidate, won the gubernatorial election held in the U.S. state of Florida. Defeating former House member Democrat David Jolly, Donalds is preparing to take office as the state's first Black governor.
According to the Associated Press's (AP) election projection, Donalds secured Florida's governorship for the Republican Party by outpacing his opponent in the November 3 election. He will replace Republican Governor Ron DeSantis, whose term is ending.
Republican governance will continue in Florida.
Byron Donalds's victory ensured the continuation of the Republican administration that has been in power in Florida for nearly 30 years. Known as a close political ally of President Donald Trump, Donalds signaled during his campaign that he would carry on Republican policies.
Following the early support announced by Trump, Donalds, who won the Republican nomination, faced Democrat David Jolly in the general election. In most polls, Donalds appeared ahead of his opponent before the election.
The voters' priority was the cost of living.
One of the core agenda items of the campaign in Florida was the cost of living. Voters' concerns, especially about housing prices, the cost of homeownership, and economic conditions, stood out.
According to a poll conducted before the election, 39% of Floridians said their economic situation had worsened compared to two years ago, while 26% said it was better.
Donalds proposed streamlining the construction permit process to lower housing costs. He argued that these reforms would accelerate new home production and reduce construction costs.
David Jolly ran for the Democratic Party.
The Democratic nominee for the election, David Jolly, was a former congressman who had served on the Republican Party ticket. After switching parties to join the Democrats, Jolly highlighted centrist politics and reaching out to diverse voter groups in his campaign.
Jolly aimed to restore the Democrats' strength in Florida, focusing especially on economic issues and housing costs. However, he could not overcome the significant advantage Donalds had in campaign financing.
Who is Byron Donalds?
The 47‑year‑old Byron Donalds represented the Naples region in the House of Representatives. Elected to Congress in 2020, Donalds had previously served four years in the Florida House of Representatives.
After the 2020 presidential election, Donald, who was among Republican politicians who opposed the certification of Joe Biden's victory, emerged in the subsequent period as a prominent figure in Trump's inner political circle.
With Donalds' gubernatorial victory, Florida will be governed for the first time in its history by a Black governor. The new governor will take over state administration after Ron DeSantis, whose term ends in January 2027.
