What Does Panda Diplomacy Mean in China-U.S. Relations?
Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, sent from China to the U.S., have arrived in Atlanta. The two pandas will be kept in quarantine for about a month.
Two giant pandas sent from China to the United States arrived in Atlanta on Sunday, September 27, 2026. Ping Ping and Fu Shuang were brought to Hartsfield‑Jackson Atlanta International Airport aboard a special FedEx Boeing 777 aircraft.
New Home: Zoo Atlanta
Male panda Ping Ping and female panda Fu Shuang were sent to the United States under a new international partnership between Zoo Atlanta and the China Wildlife Conservation Association. Both pandas were born in 2020 at the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Base in China.
The pandas will not yet appear before visitors. Zoo Atlanta will keep the animals in routine quarantine in the facility’s biosafety area for about a month. A definitive date for when the pandas will be shown to the public has not yet been announced.
Atlanta Reunites With Its Pandas
Zoo Atlanta’s first panda agreement with China began in 1999 and ended in 2024. During that period, seven cubs of the pandas named Lun Lun and Yang Yang were born. The last four pandas were sent to China in October 2024.
The Number of Pandas in the U.S. Rises Again to Three
With the arrival of Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, Zoo Atlanta became one of three U.S. zoos housing giant pandas. The other two institutions are the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington and the San Diego Zoo.
The special Boeing 777 used to transport the pandas was dubbed “FedEx Panda Express.” Zoo Atlanta announced that FedEx covered the transportation.
Panda Diplomacy Between China and the U.S.
Sending the pandas to Atlanta stands out as a new example of the long‑standing “panda diplomacy” tradition between China and the U.S. In a statement on September 24, Chinese President Xi Jinping described the pandas as symbols of friendship between the two nations.
