How did Hamdi Ulukaya grow Chobani?
In his journey from İliç district of Erzincan to the United States, Hamdi Ulukaya gave birth to the Chobani brand from an old yogurt factory he purchased for 700,000 dollars. The company, which began production in 2007, grew into one of the leading brands in the U.S. food sector through consumer demand, the right product strategy, and its employees.

Hamdi Ulukaya, one of the most striking names in entrepreneurship stories that span from Turkey to the United States, achieved great success in the yogurt sector with the Chobani brand.
Growing up in a family involved in livestock and dairy production in the İliç district of Erzincan, Ulukaya not only expanded his own business with the company he founded in the United States, but also influenced consumer habits in the yogurt market.
Journey from Erzincan to the United States
After completing his education, Ulukaya went to the United States during his university years to learn English, and worked for a time on a farm north of New York.
His father's suggestion to produce cheese influenced his decision to enter the dairy sector.

The turning point in Ulukaya's entrepreneurial journey was an advertisement for a yogurt factory for sale.
Initially overlooking the ad, Ulukaya later retrieved it from the trash and pursued it, taking advantage of the chance to purchase the soon-to-close facility for about $700,000. He used entrepreneurial support for financing.
After taking over the factory, Ulukaya asked the former manager for recommendations on which former employees to hire. Adding four of the suggested names to his team, he began work at the factory together.

One of his first tasks was painting the factory's exterior. The lesson Ulukaya drew from that experience was the importance of taking action in entrepreneurship: starting a venture required more than just thinking and planning.
After Two Years of Research, Chobani Was Born
Ulukaya and his team focused on product development for about two years after purchasing the factory.
The team, which examined various yogurts, conducted research in multiple markets, and observed consumers' shopping habits, carried out intensive work to create the product they targeted.
Chobani began production in 2007. During its first production period, about 300 cartons of product were prepared, and the first order came from a market in Long Island.
Two weeks later, a new order from the same market signaled one of the first significant indications that consumers were buying the product again.
In the next order, Ulukaya asked the store owner whether customers were buying the yogurt again. The response showed that customers not only repurchased the product but also recommended it to others.
This feedback highlighted the importance of product quality and consumer satisfaction in the company's growth process.
Proposed a Different Model Instead of Paying Shelf Fees
In Chobani's effort to reach a larger market, partnering with major retail chains was an important step.
However, the fees demanded to place the products on the shelves represented a serious cost for the young company.
In a meeting with a supermarket chain that has about 200 stores, Ulukaya was confronted with a request for a shelf fee of roughly $200,000 for five products. Unable to meet that amount, he offered an alternative: pay as the products sold.
The method accepted by the store management gave Chobani a chance to prove itself in the market. According to Ulukaya, about three weeks later a call from the chain reported that the yogurt was selling quickly and production was struggling to meet demand.
This process became a key step in the company's expansion to new sales points.
A Company Growing with Young Employees
As Chobani grew, its need for human resources increased. Because the factory’s location made it difficult to hire experienced workers, Ulukaya chose to set up some departments with fresh graduates.
Assigning young employees responsibility in social media, finance, and other areas became part of the company's growth process. Ulukaya also explained that in his management philosophy he prioritizes clear understanding of the fundamentals over complex financial statements.
His request that a colleague handling accounting explain in plain terms what the company sells, buys, and earns reflected his approach of directly monitoring operations.
Highlights from Hamdi Ulukaya's Success Story
Chobani's founding story brings together elements such as seizing opportunities, product development, taking consumer feedback into account, and searching for alternative paths in sales strategies.
Ulukaya's experience shows that a company's growth can hinge not only on financing and distribution networks but also on creating a product that consumers choose again.
This journey from Erzincan to the United States stands out as a striking example of Turkish entrepreneurs' efforts to build brands in international markets.
