Scabies alert at hospital! Two wards closed, visitor restrictions imposed
Due to scabies cases that emerged at Prince Philip Hospital in Wales, two wards were closed. While visitor restrictions were applied at the hospital, a large-scale disinfection operation was launched.
An alarm was raised at Prince Philip Hospital in Carmarthenshire because of a flu outbreak.
In a statement by the Hywel Dda Health Board, it was reported that two wards at the hospital had been closed because of an outbreak and that visitor access would be restricted from Saturday onward.
Additional measures have been introduced at the hospital.
After the outbreak was declared, a range of measures began to be applied at the hospital.
Sharon Daniel, the Hywel Dda Health Board's director of nursing, quality and patient experience, said that the necessary measures for treating patients, staff and contacts would be applied directly.
Comprehensive cleaning and disinfection efforts were also carried out in the wards.
What Is Scabies?
Scabies is an infectious skin disease that can occur at any age and is caused by the scabies mite. The illness can manifest as intense itching that worsens at night, raised rashes, and small spots on various parts of the body.
Unlike bedbugs, scabies mites cannot be seen with the naked eye. It is noted that the disease’s onset is not directly linked to poor hygiene.
How Does Scabies Spread?
Scabies is primarily transmitted through prolonged skin contact. Shared use of beds, clothing, or towels among people living in the same household can also increase the risk of transmission.
Although the disease rarely leads to serious health problems, its high contagiousness can cause it to spread rapidly in communal living and care settings such as hospitals.
What to Watch for in Treatment?
In scabies treatment, creams and lotions prescribed or appropriate products may need to be applied to the entire body. It is recommended that all infected individuals in a household be treated simultaneously.
On the day treatment begins, it is advised to wash sheets, bedding, and clothing at a minimum temperature of 60 °C. Items that cannot be washed should be kept in a sealed bag for at least three days to kill the mites.
Individuals suspected of scabies, especially young children, should seek medical care if they develop crusted or scaly rashes, or if itching persists despite treatment.
