New virus alert after tick bite
In a study conducted by scientists in China, the previously unknown Asian longhorned tick nairovirus (ALTNV) was detected. In the study of 3,163 patients with tick exposure, it was determined that 7 of the 38 individuals carrying two different viruses had died.
In China, a study of 3 163 people who sought medical care after a tick bite with fever complaints found a new virus. RNA or IgM antibodies indicating an ALTNV infection were detected in patients.
According to the study, ALTNV can cause symptoms such as high fever, fatigue, and gastrointestinal problems. However, experts point out that it has not yet been shown to be lethal on its own.
In the group carrying both viruses, 7 deaths.
Among the 38 patients found to carry both ALTNV and Dabie bandavirus, severe symptoms such as kidney failure and acute respiratory distress were more common. Seven patients in this group died. Researchers say that it cannot be stated that the deaths were directly caused by ALTNV, and that the interaction between the two viruses may have worsened the disease.
Scientists also examined 47 428 ticks collected from 15 Chinese provinces in the laboratory. ALTNV genetic material was detected in about 1,3% of the ticks.
