Kroger's massive layoff plan! 3,000 people will be left unemployed
Kroger, one of the United States' largest traditional supermarket chains, plans to eliminate roughly 3,000 corporate positions over the next three years. The company will use the savings to lower store prices and improve customer service.

U.S.-based retail giant Kroger is preparing to implement a comprehensive layoff plan to overhaul its corporate structure. According to an internal memo obtained by Bloomberg, the company, which has about 8,200 corporate employees, will eliminate roughly 3,000 of those positions over the next three years.
The plan will affect more than a third of the company's corporate workforce. Cincinnati‑based Kroger aims to streamline management processes, cut costs, and boost operational efficiency with this move.
A Restructuring Move from the New CEO
Greg Foran, who took over as CEO in February and previously ran Walmart’s U.S. operations, said the company’s current structure has too many layers of management and administrative expenses.
In a note sent to employees, Foran said simplifying the organizational structure would speed up decision‑making and eliminate redundant work. He emphasized that new technologies, especially artificial intelligence, would play an important role in streamlining internal workflows.
Kroger management is expected to disclose details on the positions affected by the layoffs in the coming months.
Savings will be reflected in grocery prices
The company plans to channel the savings from cutting corporate staff directly into store operations. This includes lowering grocery prices, enhancing customer experience, and supporting staff who interact directly with customers in stores.
Kroger, which also includes regional grocery chains such as Ralphs and Fred Meyer, had laid off about a thousand employees last year. The new plan is a continuation of the company's efforts to bring costs under control.
Competitive pressure accelerated restructuring
Facing slowing growth, price‑sensitive consumers, and intense competition in the retail sector, Kroger is adopting a new strategy. Under CEO Foran’s leadership, the company is emphasizing price cuts while taking a more determined approach in negotiations with suppliers.
The layoffs, planned to be spread over the next three years, are said to be part of the company’s goal of shrinking its corporate structure while allocating more resources to store operations.
