At least 20 people lost their lives in a collapse at a mine operating in the Mayo-Kam region of Taraba State, Nigeria. In the incident that occurred in the morning hours, it was reported that a large number of workers were trapped under the rubble after the roof of the mine collapsed.

Police Launch Investigation

The Problem of Illegal Mining in Nigeria

In Nigeria, illegal mining operations have long persisted in areas where gold and other minerals are extracted. Collapses that occur in mines with inadequate safety measures sometimes result in loss of life.

Mine accidents, working conditions and regulatory shortcomings are cited among the country's major problems in the mining sector. It was reported that an investigation into the cause of the collapse in Mayo-Kam is ongoing.
