Armed Attack in Minneapolis: 2 Dead, 5 Injured

An armed attack occurred in an apartment building in the Minneapolis downtown area of Minnesota, USA, on Wednesday afternoon. Police said that two people were killed and at least five were injured in the incident near 15 East Grant Street. It was reported that among the wounded were three police officers.

Police arrived at the scene at 16.36.

Minneapolis Police Department units were dispatched to the area at 16.36 following a report of gunfire. When officers entered the building, they found a person had been shot and proceeded toward the upper floors where the gunfire was coming from. Officials said the teams encountered a dense fog on one of the upper floors that severely reduced visibility.

Three Police Officers Injured

During the attack, three police officers were injured. Police officials said that one officer was shot in the leg, another was wounded by a firearm. One of the injured officers was taken to surgery on Wednesday evening. The third officer was evaluated for a non-life-threatening injury.

Suspect Killed

The suspect of the attack also lost his life during the incident. According to CBS News sources, the suspect died as a result of shooting himself. Authorities have not yet determined the reason for the attack. Sources reported that the suspect was evacuated from the apartment he lived in a few hours before the incident. It was announced that the suspect was 35‑year‑old Carlton Neal Johnson.

Mass Police Gathering in the Apartment

After the armed attack, a large number of law enforcement units were dispatched to the scene. While police carrying long‑rifled weapons were positioned around the apartment on Grant Street, two heavily armored SWAT vehicles were held ready at the intersection of Nicollet and Grant. A large number of ambulances were sent to the area.

Teams Came from Surrounding Areas

Only Minneapolis police did not participate in the operation. Police from St. Louis Park, Edina, the University of Minnesota, the Minnesota State Police, transit police, and sheriff’s teams from surrounding areas also provided support at the scene. It was reported that special agents from the field unit of the Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Bureau (ATF) in St. Paul also came to the area.

People Trapped in the Apartment

During the incident, some residents in the area stayed inside the apartment building. Witness Shawn Mosby said the attack occurred while he was helping his daughter move into a friend's place. Mosby added that his daughter had called him on the phone and, for safety, had closed the door and hidden in the bathroom.

Witness Recounted Gunfire

From South Minneapolis, Abdiwakil Mohamed said he heard gunfire while driving along La Salle Avenue. Mohamed said he heard three handgun sounds resembling rifle fire and saw a police officer shot in his squad car. According to the witness, the officer later accelerated the vehicle and collided with another car.

Federal Officials Involved

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz announced that state officials had been dispatched to the scene to support local law‑enforcement forces. FBI Director Kash Patel also said he was aware of the attack and that all resources needed by local authorities would be provided. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison described the attack as horrific and shared a message of support for the victims and the injured.

Investigation Ongoing

Police are continuing the investigation to determine the exact cause of the attack and all details of the incident; authorities have asked the public to stay away from 15 East Grant Street and the surrounding area while investigations continue, and after the incident extensive security measures were implemented in downtown Minneapolis, with new information expected to be shared in later stages of the investigation.
