The National Weather Service (NWS) noted that the risk is higher in New Jersey, and warned residents of New York City and its surroundings to be prepared for possible changes in weather conditions.
Risk Will Continue for Three Days
According to the NWS, the severe weather threat is expected to begin on Tuesday and last until Thursday. While forecasts still contain some uncertainty, it is noted that different hazards could emerge each day.
Officials emphasize that strong winds, large hail, and several tornado possibilities should not be overlooked. Warnings also note that severe winds could topple trees and damage power lines.
It is highlighted that the risk of flash flooding may increase in areas with dense development.
The First Wave Arrives on Tuesday
According to forecasts, the first wave of rainfall in New York City could occur between 7:00 AM and 10:00 AM on Tuesday morning.
In the afternoon, new showers and occasional severe thunderstorms are expected to develop. The storms could affect the region until between 8:00 PM and 9:00 PM.
The risk of a severe storm on Tuesday is assessed at level 2 out of 5. However, uncertainty remains about how much the heavy cloudiness will affect the storms' development.
The Most Critical Day Is Wednesday
For New York City and New Jersey, Wednesday is expected to be the day that warrants the most careful monitoring.
After the day began cloudy and humid, it is forecast that heavy showers and thunderstorm activity could affect the region in the afternoon.
For Wednesday, the risk level was announced as 2 out of 5, with the greatest danger being strong, damaging winds.
In addition, the risk of flash flooding will rise significantly. Rainfall amounts are expected to reach 1 to 2 inches per hour in some areas, with total local precipitation up to 3 inches.
Thursday's Danger Doesn't End
The severe weather threat is expected to continue on Thursday. The hazardous area is projected to shift somewhat southward, potentially covering a large portion of the Mid-Atlantic region.
Thus, New York and its surroundings will face a severe weather threat for three consecutive days.
Trees Can Fall, Power Outages May Occur
Officials warn that trees and power lines can be toppled, especially during strong winds. A sudden heavy rainfall over a short period could trigger flash floods in densely populated urban areas, including New York City.
