Energy Voucher up to $200 in New York: Who Will Receive It?
In New York, up to $200 payments will be made to 8.2 million households under the energy assistance program. The distribution of vouchers will begin on September 21.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced that checks will be distributed to approximately 8.2 million households in the state to support energy costs. Under the $1 billion program, payments are expected to be mailed starting September 21, 2026, and to continue through December.
Who Will Receive Payments?
Checks will be sent automatically to those who file their 2024 New York state tax return on time, reside full‑time in the state, meet income requirements, and are not claimed as a dependent on another person's tax return.
Payment Amount Varies With Income
Households filing joint returns with an annual income below $150,000 will receive $200. Those filing joint returns with income between $150,000 and $300,000 will receive $150. Among single taxpayers, those with an annual income below $150,000 will receive $100.
No Application Required
Those who will benefit from the energy assistance do not need to submit an additional application or fill out a form. Checks will be sent directly by mail to New York residents who meet the eligibility criteria.
Purpose: To Ease Rising Energy Bills
The New York administration launched the program to reduce the impact of rising energy and public utility costs on household budgets throughout 2026. A total of 1 billion dollars has been allocated for the POWER program in the state's FY 2027 budget.
Things New Yorkers Should Note
Because payments will be sent in stages up to December, eligible individuals will not receive their checks on the same date. Since the system announced by officials does not require additional registration, those entitled to payment must track the check that will arrive by mail.
