In New York, the fleet is being renewed: 650 new buses from MTA
In New York, MTA is pressing the button for the largest one-time bus purchase since 2013. 650 new CNG buses will serve more than one million passengers.
In the United States, New York's public transit agency Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has launched a bidding process for 650 new vehicles to renew its bus fleet. The project announced by New York Governor Kathy Hochul on September 10 will be the largest one‑off renewal of the MTA bus fleet since 2013.
When the purchase financed under the MTA's 2025‑2029 Capital Plan is completed, the new vehicles will make up more than 10% of the agency's bus fleet. The MTA expects the vehicles to serve over one million passengers per day.
The new vehicles will run on CNG.
All 650 buses put out to tender will operate on compressed natural gas (CNG). The vehicles will replace the aging CNG buses that are currently in service. The MTA aims for the new buses to improve service reliability, reduce maintenance needs, and enhance air quality. The agency also notes that CNG is a lower‑cost and more environmentally friendly alternative to diesel fuel.
According to the MTA, 100% of the natural gas used in its CNG buses is balanced by renewable natural gas produced from methane captured at sources such as landfills and farms. The agency says the practice will cut greenhouse‑gas emissions over the vehicle's life cycle and provide a cost advantage against diesel price volatility.
Aging buses are being replaced.
The new procurement is part of MTA's phased renewal plan for its aging fleet. According to the agency's statement, 41 new buses entered service starting in July, and the average age of the buses they replace is 18 years, while the oldest vehicle is reported to be 21 years old.
MTA also plans for 30% of the standard bus purchases under the current fleet plan to be CNG vehicles. Within the same framework, the acquisition of 500 zero-emission buses and the establishment of charging infrastructure for buses are also planned.
Proposals are due by October 19.
The tender prepared for 650 buses is being conducted under MTA's new Rolling Stock Program. The program aims to provide manufacturers with greater flexibility in offering different solutions and to accelerate the contract process.
The New York City Transit Authority has opened a tender for low-floor CNG buses of 40 feet in length. Bidders must submit their proposals by October 19, 2026.
New York State Governor Kathy Hochul said the investment aims to provide more reliable bus service and reduce the time older vehicles spend in maintenance, while MTA management said it will accelerate fleet renewal with CNG vehicles as electric bus technology continues to develop.
