The New York Department of Health and Mental Hygiene announced that a person living in one of the city's five boroughs has contracted West Nile virus.

Officials said the person was infected after spending time outdoors in various areas outside the city.

Since June, the virus has been detected in mosquitoes in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island boroughs.

The Health Department increased mosquito surveillance and control efforts after the case.

22 cases were reported in the United States.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 22 West Nile virus cases have been reported nationwide so far in 2026. A significant portion of the cases were seen in Arizona, Texas, and California.

The West Nile virus is primarily transmitted through mosquito bites and can cause serious illnesses in some cases.
