A new bill aimed at regulating the nutritional values of children's menus in New York, USA, was considered on October 19 in the Health Committee of the City Council. The regulation, presented by City Council Member Kevin Riley representing the Bronx district, seeks to introduce new rules targeting the contents of meals offered to children by large restaurant chains.

Chains with 15 or More Outlets

According to the draft, restaurant chains operating under the same name and having 15 or more outlets must include at least one portion of fruit and one portion of vegetables in their children's menus. The method of preparing the vegetables must be specified on the menu, and they must not be deep‑fried, as part of the conditions.

Calorie Limit and Other Nutritional Values Will Change

The regulation sets a maximum of 630 calories for children's meals, limits sodium to 630 milligrams, and saturated fat to 7 grams. Menus must also contain at least 4 grams of fiber. The draft also aims to ban the offering of desserts, except for sugar‑free fruit, in children's menus.

New Rules Also Apply to Beverage Options

The proposal also revises the beverages that can be offered on children's menus. It foresees allowing water without added sweeteners and milk alternatives that are nutritionally equivalent to milk, as well as 100% fruit or vegetable juice. The fruit-juice portion will be limited to a maximum of 6.75 ounces, while milk and equivalent alternatives will be capped at 8 ounces. Flavored milk is being removed from the list of permitted options.

If enacted, it will take effect 18 months later.

It is noted that the bill discussed in the New York City Council has not yet become law. If the proposal is adopted and becomes law, the new rules will begin to be applied 18 months after they come into force. Should the regulation take effect, restaurant chains covered by it will have to reorganize their children's menus to meet the specified nutrition standards.
