ICE protest in New York: Reactions rise...

In the Marble Hill area of New York, a protest was organized for 28‑year‑old Dominican Republic citizen Oscar Belgal, who was shot by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers. Protesters demanded that ICE leave the city and that the New York Police Department (NYPD) end its cooperation with the agency.

During the protest held in New York, demonstrators reacted to the shooting of Belgal when his five‑year‑old child was also in the vehicle. After the incident, Belgal, who was taken to the hospital, was later placed under ICE supervision.

In the edited footage released by the NYPD, officers are seen approaching Belgal’s vehicle and the driver‑side window is broken. However, the footage does not show the moment the gun was fired. ICE officials, meanwhile, said they were unaware that a child was in the vehicle during the operation.

The immigrant‑rights organization Make the Road New York filed a petition with the court to prevent Belgal’s deportation. It was reported that the petition was accepted by federal judges.

Thousands of people protested immigration policies.

Bronx and Manhattan borough presidents Vanessa Gibson and Brad Hoylman‑Sigal, in a joint statement, criticized ICE’s practices in the city and voiced concerns about officers’ use of firearms.

The day after the incident, a march with more than 1,000 participants was held at Foley Square while demonstrations also took place in Marble Hill. Protesters demanded accountability in police interventions and called for the end of ICE’s practices.

During the demonstrations, some neighborhood residents supported the protesters while others expressed different views on the operation, citing Belgal's past police record as a reason.
