Tension over Netanyahu in New York: Protesters Will March to the UN
Tension rises in New York ahead of Netanyahu's UN speech! Activist groups will meet on Thursday in Bryant Park and march to the UN Headquarters.
Protest preparations began in the city ahead of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's planned speech at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Activist groups called for a large‑scale march in Manhattan on Thursday, September 24.
Gathering at Bryant Park
According to the organizers' announcement, demonstrators will assemble at Bryant Park in downtown Manhattan at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. After the meeting, protesters are expected to march toward the United Nations Headquarters.
The event notice issued by CODEPINK also calls for participation in the action at Bryant Park, noting that the protest is organized by the Palestinian Youth Movement.
Organizers demand accountability from Netanyahu and the Israeli government for their actions in Gaza. The calls for action highlight accusations of war crimes and violations of international law. The Israeli government, however, rejects the genocide allegations and maintains that its military operations in Gaza are carried out against Hamas.
Another Protest on the Same Day
Because of Netanyahu's UN program, different protests are also expected to be held in New York on the same day.
New Jewish Narrative, together with J Street, New York Jewish Agenda, T’ruah, and Partners for Progressive Israel, announced that it will hold a separate demonstration between 12:00 P.M. and 1:00 P.M. at Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza near the UN.
The organizers of this demonstration also call for an end to the war and for protests against the Israeli government's policies.
NYPD Raises Security Measures
The arrival of world leaders in New York for the UN General Assembly has led to increased security measures in Manhattan. The NYPD announced that multiple protest demonstrations are expected to be held in the city during UN week.
In statements about UN week from New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, it was stated that the right to peaceful protest will be protected, but violence, property damage, or other law violations will be addressed.
Mamdani also announced that, while continuing his harsh criticisms of Netanyahu, he does not plan to take part in the protests scheduled during UN week.
All eyes will be on New York on Thursday.
Because of Netanyahu's speech at the UN General Assembly, both diplomacy and street protests in New York on Thursday will be closely monitored.
Especially, due to the planned march that starts at 4:00 P.M. in Bryant Park and heads toward the UN Headquarters, there is a likelihood of heavy security measures and transportation disruptions in Manhattan's Midtown and East Side areas.
