State of Emergency Declared in New York

As a powerful nor'easter that has begun to take hold of the U.S. East Coast moves toward New York, the city raised its alert level. New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency in New York City, Long Island, and Westchester due to the risk of strong winds, coastal flooding, and power outages.

Officials warned residents that weather could deteriorate sharply over the weekend, urging especially those living along the coast to closely monitor developments.

Hochul: Take This Storm Seriously

Governor Kathy Hochul announced in a statement on Friday afternoon that a state of emergency had been declared for New York City, Long Island, and Westchester.

Hochul, urging New Yorkers to 'take this storm seriously,' asked citizens to stay alert and avoid traveling unless necessary.

The New York City administration also issued a travel advisory covering the weekend. The storm’s shift to a track closer to New York raised concerns that the expected adverse weather could worsen.

Wind May Reach 110 Kilometres per Hour at Times

One of the storm's biggest threats is expected to be strong winds. While powerful wind gusts are forecast in New York City, it is estimated that in Long Island and coastal areas the wind could reach about 110 kilometres per hour at times.

Strong winds could damage trees and power lines, potentially leading to power outages in the region.

Another danger emphasized by officials is coastal flooding. It is noted that when high tides combine with strong winds, roads in low‑lying areas could be submerged.

Weekend Rain Expected in New York

With the storm, about 50 to 75 millimetres of rain is expected across New York City, and the amount could rise further in some areas.

According to current forecasts, a strong wind will prevail in the city on Friday, while rain is expected to continue on Saturday and Sunday. It is noted that weather conditions may feel harsher especially in areas close to the coast.

Storm Hits North Carolina

The nor'easter began to take effect in regions further south in the United States before reaching New York.

Severe coastal flooding occurred in North Carolina's Outer Banks region. Floodwaters around Pea Island reached about 1.2 meters at some points, while parts of N.C. Highway 12, one of the area's major transportation routes, were submerged.

Officials stated that the extent of damage on the road could not be determined until the waters receded.

Concert Canceled in New Jersey

Adverse weather conditions have begun to affect events in the New York–New Jersey region.

The AC/DC concert scheduled for Friday evening at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey was cancelled following the severe wind warnings issued for the region.

Stadium officials said the decision was made in consultation with weather experts and public‑safety authorities to protect spectators.

Officials Urge Avoiding Unnecessary Travel

New Yorkers are urged to closely monitor official weather and emergency alerts, especially on Friday night and throughout the weekend.

Residents of coastal areas are advised to stay away from roads at high tide that are at risk of flooding, drivers to avoid water‑logged roads, and citizens to be prepared for possible power outages.

It is also advised that travelers by plane, train or ferry check their schedules before departure.

While officials continue to warn, authorities are closely monitoring whether the Nor'easter will cause serious disruptions to transportation, power infrastructure, and daily life around New York over the weekend.
