In toilets to be installed under a $4 million pilot project announced by New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, users will receive audible alerts at the 5th and 8th minutes. When the 10 minutes are reached, the door will open automatically.

The system aims to prevent toilets from being occupied for long periods, and to detect health problems that may arise inside more quickly.

Will serve 17 locations.

The free toilets will be open daily from 07:00 to 22:00. Access can be obtained via phone, QR code, or app; for those without phones, a card option will be provided.

Facilities to be built in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, and Staten Island will include a sink, a flush toilet, an air‑conditioning system, and a baby‑care area. The pilot program will last one year.
