An Ordinary Fish Hook Wins a Million‑Dollar Prize
Near the city of Darwin in Australia, a barramundi about 80 centimetres long hooked onto Morris’s line. At first the young man thought he had caught an ordinary fish, but when he noticed the special tag on the fish he was confronted with a surprise of a lifetime.
He Became the Second Person in the Competition’s History
The caught fish turned out to have been released into the water as part of the annual 'Million Dollar Fish' competition held in Australia’s Northern Region.
Under the competition, barramundi with special tags are released into the region’s waters. In this season’s contest, 101 prize‑bearing fish were put into the water; those who catch 100 of them receive $10 000, and the person who catches the specially designated fish for the grand prize receives $1 million.
The 26‑year‑old Morris became the second person to win 1 million Australian dollars in the competition's 12‑year history by catching the big‑prize fish.
He was brought to tears upon hearing the million‑dollar news.
North Australian Premier Lia Finocchiaro called Morris to personally inform him that he had won the grand prize. The young fisherman, overwhelmed by the joy, could not hold back his tears. Morris then first called his mother to share the good news.
Morris said he first wanted to use the money to buy a house and pay off his debts, and that he planned to spend the remainder on personal needs.
