They used AI to impersonate their bosses! $129 million heist
In the United States, three people were charged with scamming employees by copying the voices and images of company executives with AI. The fraud, carried out under a fake lawyer identity, reportedly involved a $129 million heist.

A complaint has been filed against three individuals alleged to have used artificial‑intelligence technology in the United States to mimic the voices and images of corporate executives and lawyers. The suspects, who target thousands of companies worldwide, including the United Kingdom and the United States, are accused of carrying out a fraud of about $129 million with fake identities.
129‑Million‑Dollar Fraud Scheme
According to the complaint filed with the New York Regional Court, the three suspects operated an AI‑driven fraud scheme for more than a year and a half. The suspects, who target thousands of companies worldwide, are said to have amassed roughly $129 million.
The complaint states that the suspects used AI technology to imitate the voices—and in some cases the images—of companies’ senior executives. It says the suspects gained employees’ trust by conducting telephone and video calls with staff using this method.
They Coerced Money Transfers with a Fake Lawyer Identity
According to court documents, the suspects directed the company employees they spoke with to contact a lawyer who claimed to work at a large law firm.
Subsequently, one of the suspects who had assumed a lawyer's identity instructed employees to transfer large sums of money to bank accounts in various parts of the world.
It was reported that the suspects, who sought to conceal the source of the funds obtained through the transfers, converted the money into cryptocurrency. The assets were later recorded as being divided among the suspects and other individuals involved in the fraud scheme.
The indictment filed against the suspects on charges of electronic fraud and identity theft brought once again the question of how artificial‑intelligence technology can be used in fraudulent activities to the forefront.
