Polo Storm rapidly intensified! Red alert issued in the US and Mexico
The strengthening Polo Storm in the open waters of Mexico became one of the strongest storms of the season in the Great Ocean. NOAA's Hurricane Hunter aircraft examined the storm's center from the air.

The Polo hurricane, which was active in the waters off Mexico, intensified rapidly and became one of the most noteworthy storms of the season in the Atlantic Ocean. Data collected by NOAA’s Hurricane Hunter aircraft from the storm’s center revealed the strength the system had achieved.
According to data shared by the National Hurricane Center, based in Miami and part of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Polo’s wind speed reached about 285 kilometres per hour. The hurricane entered the records as the season’s third storm to reach Category 5, the highest level on the Saffir–Simpson scale.
The fact that the storm intensified so rapidly within just 24 hours is striking, and the system is expected to continue having an impact in the coming days. Experts say that unusually warm ocean waters in the region played a significant role in Polo’s strengthening.
Alarm on Mexico’s Coast
Polo is not expected to make direct landfall, but it is said it could cause severe weather conditions on Mexico’s southwestern coast.
While the hurricane is expected to move through the open waters of the states of Jalisco, Colima and Michoacán, residents in the region were urged to take precautions.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum also urged citizens to be cautious of the risks that the hurricane could create. While rainfall that could reach 15 to 20 centimeters in coastal areas is forecast, warnings were issued about heavy rain as well as large waves, sudden floods, and landslide risk.
Warm Ocean Waters Feed the Hurricane
It is noted that sea-surface temperatures play a role in the rapid strengthening of Hurricane Polo. It is stated that ocean temperatures above seasonal norms transfer more heat and energy to the atmosphere, thereby supporting the hurricane's intensification.
Data collected directly from the hurricane's center by NOAA's Hurricane Hunter aircraft allow meteorologists to monitor the system's structure and evolution more closely.
With the hurricane approaching the Mexican coast, close monitoring of developments in the region is requested, especially regarding heavy rain, sudden floods, landslides, and high-wave risk.
