The 64‑year‑old professor Pipo Nguyen‑Duy, who teaches at Oberlin College in Ohio, and his 56‑year‑old wife Tran Thi Phong were shot dead in their off‑campus home. In connection with the killings, the professor’s son Daniel Jones was arrested. Statements made by the suspect at his arraignment revealed the details of the incident.

The professor Pipo Nguyen‑Duy, who works at Oberlin College and Conservatory in Ohio, and his wife Tran Thi Phong were found dead in their home. Following the incident that occurred on Wednesday morning, an investigation was launched and the professor’s son Daniel Jones was taken into custody.

In a statement issued by the Oberlin Police Department, it was reported that the responding units reached the couple’s lifeless bodies on different floors. The statement noted that the male victim was on the first floor and the female victim on the second, and that both had sustained numerous gunshot wounds.

Alleged to Have Set Fire to His Vehicle Before the Murders

Police units were summoned to the campus to assist fire crews responding to a vehicle fire in a parking lot on the Oberlin College grounds about 90 minutes before the couple’s bodies were found.

The vehicle’s registered owner was identified as Daniel Jones. Later, a neighborhood resident reported seeing a man in wet, disheveled clothing at his door, prompting police to act. Arriving at the address at 10:19 local time, officers took Jones into custody without incident.

Police announced on Thursday that the woman who died was Jones's stepmother.

His words in court drew attention.

Daniel Jones was brought before the judge for the first time on Thursday afternoon. Prosecutor Zachary Simonoff made striking remarks about the suspect, who was brought into the courtroom handcuffed at the hands and ankles.

The prosecutor said that before Jones was taken into custody, he had gone to a house and asked the homeowner to film him for online publication. Simonoff said that the suspect claimed in the video that he introduced himself as Asia Nguyen-Duy and that he had escaped from a cult.

According to the prosecutor's statements read in court, Jones said in the video, "I did everything I did of my own volition and take full responsibility."

Simonoff also alleged that Jones confessed to killing his family during his first contact with police and provided his father's address. Police who arrived at the scene reportedly found blood traces in the house and two people who had died from gunshot wounds.

3 Million Dollar Bail Set

The weapon alleged to have been used by Jones—who was described as having cuts on his face and wounds on his hand and arm—has not yet been found.

The prosecutor reported that the police had also spoken with the suspect's mother, who lives in Oregon, and that she told officials her son was psychotic and needed medication.

Jones, who faced the judge on charges of multiple murders, intentional serious injury, and evidence tampering, did not defend himself at the hearing.

Despite reaching an agreement on a $1.5 million bail with the defense attorney assigned by the prosecutor and the court, Judge Farah L. Emeka set the bail at $3 million, citing the gravity of the charges.

It was reported that the indictment will be presented to the grand jury in Lorain County, and that the investigation into the motive behind the murders is ongoing.

Temporary Shelter Order Issued on Campus

Oberlin College President Carmen Twillie Ambar released a statement to students and staff following the incident. In a police investigation, Ambar announced that a temporary shelter order had been issued on campus and provided information on the developments.
