In Edremit, Balıkesir, New Party Chairman Özgür Özel met with olive growers and protested the extra customs duty levied on olive oil exported from Turkey to the United States. Özel said the 12.5% surcharge imposed by the Trump administration hurt producers and criticized the commercial ties between Turkey and the U.S.

Highlighting the importance of olive growing to the regional economy, Özel argued that the U.S. tax on olive oil imported from Turkey weakens the competitiveness of Edremit producers.

In his claim that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's talks with U.S. President Donald Trump involved concessions on aircraft purchases, liquefied natural gas, and customs duties, Özel said, "America gains from the Erdoğan‑Trump relationship, but Edremit cannot profit."

Özel said that olives and olive oil should be declared strategic products, calling for purchase guarantees for producers and protection of export markets.
