Following the death of a laboratory worker in Irkutsk, Russia's Siberian region, due to plague, at least 197 people were quarantined. Officials said no symptoms were observed among contacts and the first tests returned negative.

A female laboratory worker living in Shelehov near Irkutsk was taken to the hospital with severe pneumonia symptoms. The woman, who was connected to a ventilator, died on Thursday.
Some Russian media outlets claimed that the woman worked at the Irkutsk Institute of Rabies Control and that a test tube containing live bacteria broke while she was collecting samples. An investigation was launched to address the possible health‑safety violation related to the incident.
197 people in quarantine
At least 197 people who could have come into contact with the woman were placed in quarantine. It was reported that more than 100 of them were being observed in hospitals.
The regional hospital in Shelehov was also placed in quarantine until the special commission completed its assessment.
