The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) announced that Sergen Yalçın has been appointed as the head coach of the senior national football team. Along with the decision taken at the meeting held by the TFF Board of Directors today, it was decided that the 53‑year‑old coach would take charge of the national team.

In the federation's statement, it was noted that Sergen Yalçın and his staff will sign a four‑year contract. The announcement emphasized that Yalçın would bring the experience he gained at the club level to the moon‑and‑star team, and wished him success in his new role.

Sergen Yalçın's Playing Career

Born in Istanbul on 5 November 1972, Sergen Yalçın began his professional football career at Beşiktaş, the club where he rose through the youth ranks. Regarded as one of Turkish football's prominent talents, Yalçın also wore the shirts of İstanbulspor, Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray, and Trabzonspor during his career.

Yalçın, who earned the distinction of being the first player to have played for Beşiktaş, Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray, and Trabzonspor, achieved significant successes during his playing days. The seasoned player won four league titles and two Turkish Cups with Beşiktaş, and added two league titles and one Turkish Cup with Galatasaray.

Having won the Mediterranean Games with the U‑21 national team in 1993, Yalçın made his debut for the senior national team on 31 August 1994. He earned 37 caps and scored five goals for the national side, and was also selected for the squads at the 1996 and 2000 European Championships.

Made History at Beşiktaş

After his playing career, Sergen Yalçın turned to coaching; he served at Gaziantepspor, Sivasspor, Kayserispor, Eskişehirspor, Konyaspor, Alanyaspor, Yeni Malatyaspor, Beşiktaş and Antalyaspor.

Yalçın achieved one of the most important successes of his career by winning the Süper Lig and Turkish Cup titles with Beşiktaş in the 2020-2021 season. With this result, he became the first and only person in Beşiktaş history to win the Süper Lig title both as a player and as a coach.

After his club-level successes, Sergen Yalçın, preparing to take the helm of the A National Team, will work for the success of the Crescent-Star squad in his new role.
