In France, a cyber attack on the refrigeration systems of hundreds of branches of the Intermarché, Netto, and Coopérative U supermarket chains caused the cold chain to break and led to the destruction of tons of food. A cyber attack targeting three major retail chains in France has brought food safety to the forefront. It was reported that the cooling infrastructure of hundreds of stores belonging to the Intermarché, Netto and Coopérative U chains was targeted.

The attackers reportedly accessed systems that remotely control the refrigerators and cooling installations in the stores and altered temperature settings. As a result, the temperature balance in units storing fresh and frozen foods was disrupted.

According to reports in the national press, cybercriminals targeted the centralized cooling systems used in numerous branches across the country.

Cold Chain Disrupted, Foods Destroyed

Remote alteration of temperature settings prevented the proper preservation of products stored in the cold warehouses of the stores. Faced with a threat to food safety, retailers were forced to destroy products at risk of spoilage.

Losses at two stores in the Alsace region were reported to amount to 270,000 euros, while the total damage nationwide has yet to be officially disclosed. Initial estimates suggest that the financial loss could reach several million euros.

Coopérative U CEO Issues Firm Statement

Coopérative U senior executive (CEO) Dominique Schelcher confirmed in a statement from his account on the U.S.-based X platform that a cyber attack was carried out at night on the refrigeration systems of numerous chain‑linked supermarkets.

Highlighting the seriousness of the attack, Schelcher said the following:

“Protecting fresh produce and targeting equipment vital to France’s food supply is an extremely serious and unprecedented situation. This is unacceptable.”

Investigation Expected to Be Launched

Schelcher said the teams had been mobilized to fix the problems in the refrigeration systems and restore the situation to normal. The CEO, emphasizing that the attack must be fully illuminated, highlighted the importance of conducting an investigation to determine the scope of the incident.

The total damage caused by the cyber attack and the exact number of affected supermarkets have not yet been clarified.
