Tesla Cybertruck production is stopping! What will happen to the Texas plant?
American billionaire Elon Musk announced that Tesla Cybertruck production will be reduced and discontinued in mid‑2027. The Texas plant will now focus on robotaxi production.

Tesla's Decision That Draws Attention for the Cybertruck
U.S.-based electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla has decided to cut production of its highly anticipated Cybertruck model. In a statement posted on the social media platform X, the company's CEO Elon Musk announced that Cybertruck production at the Gigafactory in Texas would be phased out beginning in the middle of 2027.
Musk said the main reason behind the decision was to make room for increased production of the Cybercab at the factory. The company plans to prioritize the production of the robotaxi model that sits at the core of Tesla's autonomous transportation projects.

A New Era Begins at the Texas Factory
The Cybertruck has so far been produced only at Tesla's Gigafactory in Texas. Musk's statement revealed that the factory would undergo a significant shift in production priorities.
However, the Tesla CEO did not provide details on whether Cybertruck production would be moved to another facility or whether the model would be entirely discontinued. The company has yet to issue a comprehensive statement on the matter. Thus, the announcement currently outlines a plan to end production at the Texas plant.
Cybertruck Sales Fell Short of Expectations
Tesla's decision is being evaluated as influenced by Cybertruck's sales performance. The vehicle, first introduced in 2019, attracted great interest with its unconventional design, yet it did not meet the company's commercial expectations.
According to Kelley Blue Book data, Cybertruck sales fell 48% in 2025 compared to the previous year. In the January–September period of 2026, sales dropped 28% versus the same period last year. Because Tesla did not disclose sales figures by model, these numbers rely on independent automotive research.
Production Process Faced Issues and Recalls
Since its launch, Cybertruck has been in the spotlight for various quality and reliability problems. The vehicle was unveiled in 2019, but the first deliveries to customers began in November 2023.
Delays in production, high selling prices, and technical issues were among the main challenges the model faced. According to U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) records, 11 separate recalls have been carried out for Cybertruck since its launch. During this process, some vehicles were taken for physical repairs while other problems were resolved via remote software updates.
Robotaxis Rise in Tesla's Future
The decision to cut Cybertruck production is viewed as part of Tesla's strategy to pivot from automotive manufacturing toward autonomous transportation and AI technologies. The company intends to make the Cybercab model a key vehicle in the driverless transport network.
The two‑seat Cybercab, lacking a steering wheel and conventional driving controls, was developed within Tesla's robotaxi projects. The company plans to spread driverless transport services to broader areas by ramping up production of these vehicles.
