According to reports in Greenland media based on the parliament's written statement, a draft law that envisions a temporary ban on deep‑sea mining was voted on in parliament. MPs gave unanimous support to the draft that foresees the ban of mining activities until December 2029.

The decision's core objectives are to protect the marine ecosystem and to secure fishing, one of Greenland's main sources of livelihood.

2027 Set for Legal Regulation

For the draft adopted in parliament to take effect, it must be converted into legal regulation by the Greenland government. Accordingly, the government was urged to take the necessary steps in 2027.

If the regulation becomes law, the ban on deep‑sea mining can be applied for the specified period. The ban is also expected to be extendable in two‑year intervals.

WWF Ecosystem Warning

The Greenland representative office of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) said the decision adopted in parliament is significant for the protection of natural life.

The organization, which highlighted that deep‑sea mining could harm marine ecosystems and biodiversity, stressed the importance of protecting marine life.

It Followed Trump's Mining Announcement

The decision of the Greenland Parliament came after President Donald Trump announced that oil, natural gas and mineral exploration would begin on the island.

Although the timing is striking, there is no confirmed information that the parliamentary vote was a direct response to Trump's remarks.

The use of Greenland's natural resources and the protection of its marine ecosystem have resurfaced on the agenda with the decision.
