However, when choosing the right university, one must look not only at global rankings but also at program quality, scholarship opportunities, and overall cost of living.

Universities that stand out by department

In engineering, computer science, and artificial intelligence, MIT, Stanford, Carnegie Mellon, UC Berkeley, Georgia Tech, and the University of Illinois Urbana‑Champaign stand out.

For students aiming at business and finance education, the University of Pennsylvania, Harvard, NYU, Columbia, and the University of Illinois Urbana‑Champaign are presented as strong options. In international relations and politics, Georgetown, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Columbia stand out.

Annual cost can exceed $65,000.

According to College Board data, for the 2025‑2026 academic year, the average annual tuition at state universities for out‑of‑state students is $31,880, while at private universities it is around $45,000.

When lodging, food, health insurance and other expenses are added, the annual cost can rise to over $50,000 to $65,000. In major cities such as New York and Los Angeles, this figure can increase even further.

Scholarship opportunity at elite universities

Harvard, MIT, Princeton, Yale, Amherst and Bowdoin are among the private universities that can meet the calculated financial need of admitted international students. Consequently, for a student who receives comprehensive financial aid, a selective private university can be more affordable than a public university whose scholarship opportunities are limited.
