WSJ: Trump rejects Iran's 7-day ceasefire offer
The Wall Street Journal reported that U.S. President Donald Trump rejected Iran's 7-day ceasefire offer and is waiting to resume attacks after the November midterm elections.
In a story that cited unnamed senior U.S. officials, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) wrote that the Trump administration did not respond positively to the ceasefire initiative with Iran.
According to sources speaking to the newspaper, Trump is alleged to plan to restart military operations against Iran after the U.S. Congressional midterm elections in November. The story also reported that Trump has not yet made a definitive decision on the scope of the possible operations.
"Unwilling to Launch Major Operations"
In the WSJ report, Trump said "that he was unwilling to restart large-scale war operationswas stated.
One of the reasons for this stance was suggested to be the United States' desire to preserve its munitions stockpiles. According to the newspaper, Washington wants to keep its dwindling munitions reserves for other military scenarios that may arise in the future. Similar concerns about U.S. munitions stockpiles had previously been raised by the WSJ.
Iran's 7-Day Plan
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Erakchi had earlier stated that he had presented Washington, through mediators, a 7-day plan to reopen shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Reuters, Iran had said it was ready to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within a week if the United States reduced its military pressure and lifted the blockade on Iranian ports. It was noted that Iran's proposal had been conveyed to the United States via mediators on September 16.
The WSJ's latest claim came amid ongoing diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran to secure a ceasefire and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
