Volcanic activity observed at Whakaari (Beyaz Ada) Volcano in the northeastern waters of Yeni Zelanda since last week has been placed under close monitoring by scientists.

It was reported that the temperature measured on the active vent on the island rose from about 100 to 395 degrees. Officials also stated that the volcano continuously spews a small amount of ash.

According to the New Zealand Herald newspaper, officials of the Yeni Zelanda İçişleri Bakanlığı raised the volcanic alarm level from 2 to 3 in response to the developments. The color code designated for aviation was also changed from yellow to orange.

WARNING ISSUED DUE TO SUDDEN ERUPTION RISK

It was stated that the current volcanic activity does not pose a significant threat to the main island of Yeni Zelanda at this stage. However, officials warned that more violent eruptions could occur without any prior notice.

It was noted that sudden eruptions could pose serious hazards in some surrounding areas, while volcanic activity continues to be closely monitored.

In the 2019 Explosion, 22 People Lost Their Lives

Whakaari Volcano had entered the global spotlight with the deadly eruption that occurred in December 2019. During the eruption, tourists visiting the island were exposed to volcanic rock fragments and hot gases; 22 people lost their lives and 25 others were seriously injured.

Following the tragedy, safety measures concerning volcanic risks and tourist visits on the island gained greater importance. With the recent surge in activity, attention has again turned to Whakaari Volcano, and authorities continue to monitor the potential eruption risk.
