16 bankruptcies in 30 days: Alarm in the U.S. transportation sector
Cost pressure in the U.S. freight and transportation sector is growing. In recent weeks, at least 16 companies have entered bankruptcy proceedings under Chapter 7 or Chapter 11, and rising diesel prices are said to also increase food and cargo costs.
According to information based on FreightWaves' federal court filings and company data, at least 16 trucking, delivery and logistics firms in the United States filed for bankruptcy under Chapter 7 or Chapter 11 between the end of August and 21 Eylül.
It is said that in the sector, especially small and medium-sized carriers are under greater pressure due to rising fuel, insurance, maintenance, equipment and labor costs.
Diesel prices may also be passed on to consumers.
It is stated that rising diesel prices affect not only shipping companies but also the food supply chain. According to economist David Ortega of Michigan State University, trucks play an important role in transporting food from farms to markets.
In the United States, consumer food prices rose 2,7% on an annual basis in August.
Industry experts warn that a reduction in transport capacity and rising costs could put pressure on cargo deliveries and product supply in stores, especially during the year‑end shopping season.
Truck cost per unit broke record
According to data from the American Transportation Research Institute, the average operating cost per mile for a truck in 2025 rose to $2,336. This figure increased by 3.4% over the previous year, reaching the highest level recorded at the time of the report.
Operating costs excluding fuel also rose by 4.2% to $1,854 per mile. Significant increases were recorded in tolls, maintenance, driver benefits, and tire costs.
Chapter 11 typically signals a company's restructuring while continuing operations, whereas Chapter 7 points to liquidation.
