The scope of the ongoing recall of dairy products in the United States has been clarified. It was announced that the recall launched for Horizon Organic's long shelf‑life 1% fat chocolate‑flavored milk covers more than 760,000 cartons. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) assessed the recall as a Class II risk level because of the potential for product spoilage.

More Than 760,000 Cartons Affected

The recall covers Horizon Organic's 1% fat chocolate‑flavored milk in 8‑ounce (about 237 ml) cartons. The products are distributed nationwide in packs of 12 and 18.

According to the FDA’s updated records, a total of 34,524 cartons of 12‑piece packs and 19,236 cartons of 18‑piece packs are within the recall. Those figures translate to more than 760,000 individual milk cartons when counted one by one.

A detailed list of the supermarkets or food‑service establishments that received the products was not released.

Complaints of Swollen Packaging and Bad Odor

Consumer complaints are behind the recall. Horizon Organic reported that some products' packaging appears swollen and that the milk may spoil earlier than expected.

In the company's statement, it was noted that affected products could have an unpleasant taste, odor, or texture. An investigation was launched to determine the source of the problem, and corrective and preventive measures will be implemented to prevent recurrence.

FDA's 'Class II' Classification

As of September 8, the FDA classified the recall as 'Class II'. This category is used when exposure to the product can cause health problems that are temporary or can be corrected with medical intervention, but the likelihood of serious health outcomes is low.

The official reason for the recall was recorded as the products' potential to spoil.

Which Products Are Being Recalled?

In 12‑piece packs, the milk with product number 136990 and UPC code 742365002700 is subject to recall. These products have final consumption/recommended consumption dates of 28, 30 and 31 January 2027, and 1, 2 and 3 February 2027.

In 18‑piece packs, the product number is 136917 and UPC code 742365208867. The recall dates for products in this group were announced as 31 January 2027 and 1 and 2 February 2027.

Consumer Warning

Horizon Organic asked consumers who purchased the recalled products to keep their receipts and, if possible, the packaging information. The company said consumers seeking refund information could contact customer service.

Especially as the school term begins and small boxed milks are frequently chosen for children's lunchboxes, it is important for consumers to check the UPC codes and date information of products at home.
