In the Cape Cod region of Massachusetts, a discovery that caught the attention of the scientific community was made. In a protected wetland area, a two‑headed baby soft‑shelled turtle was found last month.

Ağırlığı yalnızca bir madeni para kadar olan yavru kaplumbağada, nadir görülen bir gelişim anomalisi olan bisefali tespit edildi. Olay, Cape Wildlife Center tarafından Facebook hesabından duyuruldu.

A tiny turtle was brought to the center by Mass Audubon Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, aiming to closely monitor its health condition and provide necessary care.

What is Bisefali?

Bisefali is defined as having two functional heads on a single body. According to information conveyed by Live Science, this condition typically arises when the two halves of a single embryo’s monozygotic twins fail to fully separate during development.

However, it is suggested that various environmental factors may also have contributed to the anomaly’s formation. The temperature and humidity conditions during the chick period, along with certain factors to which the parents were exposed in their surroundings, are considered possible reasons.

Only Two Cases Have Been Observed in the Last 5 Years

The Cape Wildlife Center team stated that they have encountered only two bisphenyl cases in the last five years. Consequently, it was emphasized that the found juvenile turtle is an extremely rare specimen.

In a statement by the center, it was said that each case offers an important opportunity to better understand the anatomy and physiology of these unusual creatures.

The team closely monitors the little turtle’s appetite, development, and behavior. Experts regularly observe its growth and health to ensure it can survive.
