The wealthiest age group in the U.S. has changed: Those over 75 are at the top.
According to research by the U.S. Federal Reserve, households headed by people aged 75 and older have become the country's wealthiest age group. The median net worth of households headed by those under 35 fell by 23 percent during the 2022-2025 period.

The Consumer Finance Survey published by the Fed every three years revealed differences in the distribution of wealth across age groups and income levels in the United States.
The rise in the stock market was especially effective in boosting the wealth of affluent households.
The wealth of the elderly rose while the young fell behind.
Between 2022 and 2025, the median net wealth of households headed by people aged 75 and over rose from $367,000 to $505,000. In contrast, the median net wealth of households headed by people under 35 fell by 23% to $33,000.
An increase was also seen in the United States' wealthiest 10 percent. The median net wealth of this group rose by 31% during the same period to $3.6 million.
Delays in debt payments increased.
Research showed that despite a real increase in incomes, debt repayment difficulties have become more widespread. The proportion of households reporting delayed credit payments rose from 12.2% in 2022 to about 20% in 2025.
