Some features of Instagram and Facebook that shape the habits of millions of users may change due to a lawsuit in the United States. Meta is the target of a lawsuit filed by 29 states, citing that it collects children's data without permission and uses apps that keep teens on screens for longer periods.

Limiting Infinite Scroll
Among the states' demands is the removal of the infinite scroll feature on Instagram. Additionally, they want the hiding of like counts on posts and the prevention of videos from autoplaying without user initiation.

Request for Algorithm Changes
The lawsuit also calls for changes to the content recommendation systems of social media platforms. The states want new rules governing the recommendation algorithms that determine the content presented to young users.
New Rules for Filters and Accounts
The removal of filters that alter appearance is also among the demands. Moreover, limiting users from creating multiple accounts and reorganizing the presentation of content that disappears after a certain period, such as stories, is requested.

Parental Approval for Youth Accounts
Among the regulations proposed by the states is obtaining parental approval for young users to open accounts. If such a measure is implemented, the processes for young users in the United States to access social media accounts could change.
Risk of $1.4 Trillion
According to Meta's calculations, the total financial burden the lawsuit could impose on the company in terms of fines and other payments could reach as much as $1.4 trillion. However, at this stage there is no finalized penalty against Meta.
New Mexico Decision Draws Attention
Meta was sentenced to pay a total of $942 million in a similar lawsuit seen in New Mexico. The company announced that it would appeal that decision. It is noted that the outcome of the new lawsuit could have significant implications for how Instagram and Facebook are used in the United States.

Meta Denies Allegations
Meta, stating that it is conducting work to protect children and youth, does not accept the allegations against it. While the company's defense continues, if a nationwide ruling is issued in line with the demands of 29 states, some of the most well‑known features of Instagram and Facebook could change across the United States.
