Massive Review of Tap Water in the United States

A new study is being launched in the United States that draws attention to the safety of drinking water. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will conduct a comprehensive scientific study aimed at uncovering pharmaceutical residues, PFAS, and a multitude of chemical substances that may be missed in conventional tests.

Going Beyond Conventional Tests

The EPA’s new study will employ the Non‑Targeted Analysis (NTA) method, known as “Target‑Unspecified Analysis.” While conventional water tests typically focus on detecting pre‑identified substances, this approach gives researchers the ability to conduct a far broader chemical survey.

Thus, not only known pollutants but also substances previously thought unlikely to appear in drinking water or not examined in routine checks can be identified.

The EPA announced that the study will examine more than 1,000 potential pollutants, including pharmaceutical residues and PFAS. Data from the research are expected to help determine which substances should be monitored more closely and which should be subject to future regulation.

Unidentified Pollutants Under the Lens

EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin said that Americans have clearly expressed concerns about unknown contaminants that could be present in drinking water.

Zeldin emphasized that the EPA is determined to uncover the source of these concerns, adding that the research will help people gain clearer information about the safety of drinking water.

The study is said to complement the programs already underway under the Safe Drinking Water Act.

There Are Many Sources From Drugs to Industry

One of the most important problems facing experts is determining which of the thousands of chemicals that enter the environment should be prioritized for study from the perspective of human health and drinking water.

Consumer products, industrial activities, agriculture, and the use or disposal of pharmaceuticals can introduce large numbers of substances into the environment and, consequently, into water resources.

Thanks to a new analytical method, researchers will be able to compare water chemical signals with extensive databases rather than checking a pre‑prepared limited chemical list, thereby gaining information about substances that fall outside routine monitoring.

Microplastics Have Entered the Priority List

EPA's new study is part of the agency's broader research on chemicals in drinking water that are not yet regulated by federal standards.

In the draft Sixth Candidate Contaminant List prepared by the agency, microplastics and pharmaceuticals were placed among priority contaminant groups for the first time. Further research and data collection on these substances are crucial for determining whether they will be incorporated into future federal regulations.

EPA also proposed the Sixth Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR 6) in June. If the rule is finalized, it would require monitoring of 30 contaminants that are currently not subject to federal standards.

The Results Could Pave the Way for New Regulations

It is stated that the new study was conducted not to conclude that specific chemicals are dangerous, but to more comprehensively identify which substances are present in drinking water.

The real significance of the study will emerge in the subsequent process. The findings EPA will obtain could lay the groundwork for closer monitoring of certain pollutants, new scientific research, and future changes to drinking‑water standards.
