Energy drink ban in schools in the United States: covers more than 77,000 students.

A new regulation aimed at protecting students' health has come into force in the U.S. state of Delaware. The sale of energy drinks to students in middle and high schools across the state has been banned. The measure, signed by Governor Matt Meyer, is expected to directly affect approximately 77,000 students from grades six through twelve.

Sales Will Not Be Allowed During School Hours

Under the new law, the sale of energy drinks to students on Delaware middle and high school campuses has been completely prohibited. The restriction covers not only regular class hours but also extended school day programs held after classes.

The regulation does not prevent students from purchasing energy drinks from markets and stores outside school and bringing them to campus. The ban will apply only to sales activities directly on school grounds.

Which Drinks Will Be Classified as Energy Drinks?

The law also defines the scope of energy drinks in detail. According to it, products containing caffeine, produced to provide energy, and typically combining methylxanthines, B vitamins, and various plant-based ingredients will be considered within the ban.

Traditional caffeinated beverages made by brewing coffee beans or tea leaves were excluded from the regulation.

Healthier Students Focus Better

Educators backing the regulation note that students' health status also impacts academic achievement.

Lake Forest School District Inspector Dr. Steven Lucas said that schools in the district already comply with USDA nutrition rules and do not sell energy drinks.

Lucas said that students' physical health is linked to academic performance, noting that healthy students focus better on lessons and participate more actively in school activities.

With the new regulation, Delaware joined the ranks of states limiting school‑aged children's access to energy drinks.
