An unexpected discovery was made during security work carried out at the governor's residence in Bismarck, the capital of North Dakota, USA. In the excavations carried out as part of a $2.35 million project to build a security wall around the residence and to undertake landscaping, seven historic coffins were found buried beneath the ground.

When human remains were encountered in the area where machinery was operating, work in that section was halted and archaeologists and historians were brought in. The examinations revealed that the land on which the governor's residence now stands had been used as a cemetery about 150 years ago.

Remains of a Small Child Found in One of the Coffins

Among the seven coffins uncovered in the dig, bone remains belonging to individuals of various age groups were identified. Initial assessments indicated that the remains belonged to two women, two men, two youths, and a small child.

Following the discovery, experts who began investigating the region's past determined that the site had been used as Bismarck's first official cemetery between 1873 and 1877.

Thus, an ordinary construction project launched to enhance security turned into a significant archaeological investigation that shed light on the city's past.

The 150-Year-Old Secret Came to Light Through Old Newspaper Reports

One of the most striking details of the research, however, surfaced in newspaper records from about 150 years ago.

Experts examining the historical documents determined that in the 1880s work was carried out to move the graves from the old cemetery to another site. However, it was understood that some graves were left in place during those operations.

Kara Haff, spokesperson for the North Dakota State Historical Society, announced that local newspapers of the era reported on the relocation of graves.

According to Haff, one of the articles from that period stated that all but two graves were moved.

However, the discovery of seven coffins in recent digs suggests that the number of graves left behind may exceed the figures recorded in historical documents.

More than 80 suspicious sites in the governor's residence garden

After the discovery, expert teams examined not only the area where the coffins were found but also other surrounding areas of the governor's residence

In field surveys completed in the middle of last month, more than 80 points requiring archaeological assessment were identified

While it has not yet been confirmed that human remains were found at all of these sites, experts are continuing a detailed analysis of the findings

The research results are expected to be completed in the first months of 2027. The examinations will also help determine the boundaries of the old cemetery and any other graves that may have been left behind in the area

The remains of seven people will be reburied

The human remains, uncovered about a century and a half ago, are planned to be reburied after the necessary scientific examinations are completed.

According to information relayed by officials, the remains are expected to be transferred to a cemetery in Bismarck during a ceremony scheduled for the spring of 2027.

Meanwhile, it was reported that the cost of the archaeological salvage work carried out during the security project at the governor's residence had reached approximately 155,000 dollars.

The extraordinary discovery in North Dakota has brought to the fore not only forgotten graves but also the differences between historical records that reach back to the city's founding years and today's findings. The most important question experts now seek answers to is whether there are other graves beneath the land where the governor's residence is located.
