A striking claim about the behind-the-scenes aspects of the U.S. decision to cut staff at its diplomatic missions in the Middle East has surfaced.

It was alleged that U.S. intelligence warned the Washington administration that Iran had significantly increased attacks targeting U.S. citizens and personnel.

According to Axios, the intelligence memo sent to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that Iran had intensified preparations for attacks against American personnel.

The memo stated that "Iran's lethal conspiracy efforts against U.S. citizens have advanced to more serious stages both in the Middle East and in some other countries."

However, the memo noted that details about the targets, planned methods, or timing of potential attacks were not provided.

Following the intelligence warning, it was alleged that the U.S. Department of State ordered staff reductions at embassies in Lebanon, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, and Jordan.

A U.S. official speaking to Axios said the decision was taken due to rising security risks in the region. It was stated that the aim was to mitigate potential attack risks by reducing staff serving in diplomatic missions.

"Only Essential Personnel Will Remain"

The U.S. official, in his assessment of limiting diplomatic activities, used the statement: "Because of Husi attacks and the threat of Iran‑originated terrorism, we decided to reduce our activities and keep only essential personnel."

It was indicated that under the decision, U.S. embassies in four countries will continue operations with only essential staff.

Meanwhile, it was noted that claims about Iran's attack preparations have not been independently verified, and no official statement has been made regarding the targets and timing of potential attacks. Washington's new steps to counter security risks in the region are being closely monitored.
