Walter Koenig, known for his role as Pavel Chekov in Star Trek, died at age 90 at his home in Los Angeles. His manager announced the death.

Walter Koenig, who portrayed the Russian navigator Pavel Chekov in the American‑made cult science‑fiction series Star Trek, died at age 90. The actor’s manager Zachery McGinnis announced that Koenig had passed away in his home in North Hollywood, Los Angeles. No details of the actor’s death were released.

Reached a Wide Fan Base with the Chekov Character
Born in Chicago on 14 September 1936, Koenig brought the Pavel Chekov character to life in the production he joined for the second season of Star Trek. Chekov, the young Russian navigator of the USS Enterprise starship, became one of the show’s unforgettable characters. In the Cold‑War‑era production that appeared on screen, the character stood out as one of the names demonstrating that people from different countries can work toward a common goal.
Had a Role in Seven Star Trek Films
Koenig also portrayed the Chekov character in the seven Star Trek films shot from 1979 onward. The original series, broadcast on NBC from 1966‑1969, evolved over the years into new productions with different casts. While the series built a large fan community worldwide, the events organized around it brought thousands of people together.
Engaged in Writing and Education Beyond Acting
Walter Koenig's career was not limited to Star Trek. The actor wrote scripts for television productions such as Family and The Incredible Hulk. He also worked in education, teaching part‑time courses at UCLA and other institutions. Koenig continued his work on the Star Trek universe with the book Chekov's Enterprise, published in 1980. He also appeared in the science‑fiction series Babylon 5, released in the 1990s.
George Takei's Emotional Tribute Message
George Takei, who portrayed Hikaru Sulu in Star Trek, posted a message on social media after the death of his co‑star. Takei said that Koenig would be remembered not only for his role as Chekov, but also for his writing, teaching, and friendship. The two actors' friendship had lasted many years. Koenig had served as a best man at Takei's wedding to Brad Altman in 2008.
Two Actors Remaining from the Original Cast
With Koenig's death, the only surviving members of the original Star Trek cast were William Shatner and George Takei. Shatner, who played Captain James T. Kirk, and Takei, who portrayed Sulu, are among the living members of the original ensemble. Leonard Nimoy, known for the character Spock; Nichelle Nichols, who played Uhura; James Doohan, who portrayed Scotty; and DeForest Kelley, who played Dr. Leonard McCoy had all passed away earlier.
