Gasoline Tax Suspended in That State of the USA

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, after the rise in fuel prices, again temporarily suspended the state's motor fuel tax. The decision was announced with an executive order signed on September 28, 2026.

The regulation took effect after midnight on Tuesday, September 29. Under the executive order, the tax is slated to remain suspended until October 19.

33.3-Cent Fuel Tax

In Georgia, under normal conditions, gasoline carries a 33.3-cent per gallon motor fuel tax, while diesel is taxed at 37.3 cents per gallon. With the tax suspended, these amounts are temporarily removed from pump prices.

Gasoline Price Rose to $4.19

According to AAA data, the average price of regular gasoline in Georgia rose to about $4.19 per gallon. This figure is roughly 28 cents below the national average, yet represents a 10-cent increase over the previous week.

Significant Difference Compared to Last Year

The gasoline price in the state was about $2.87 during the same period in 2025. Thus, the current average price has risen markedly compared to the same period last year.

Kemp's order does not only cover fuel taxes. The weight limits for commercial vehicles on state roads are also temporarily suspended. It was stated that the regulation aims to reduce the cost of transporting goods.

How Will Tax Revenues Be Covered?

In Georgia, revenues from gasoline taxes are used to finance roads and bridges. It was announced that the loss of revenue during the period when the tax is suspended will be covered by the state's accumulated budget surplus.

It Was Also Implemented Earlier in Georgia

Kemp had previously temporarily suspended the fuel tax. The tax was temporarily lifted during the price hikes following the war in Ukraine in 2022, during the high inflation period in 2023, and after Hurricane Helene in 2024.
