Anthropic's noteworthy decision: users insulting Claude may violate the rules

Anthropic, from November 12 onward, may treat insulting behaviors towards the AI that lack a continuous and constructive purpose as rule violations in Claude's terms of service. While criticism and objection remain free, the possible conscious state of the AI has reignited the debate.

U.S.-based artificial‑intelligence company Anthropic has brought a notable approach to the fore in Claude's terms of service. According to the regulation set to take effect from 12 Kasım, users who continually insult the AI and persist in bad behavior without any constructive purpose could be deemed to have violated the rules.

Criticism is free, continuous insults are controversial.

The new approach does not prohibit users from reacting to Claude's incorrect answers, criticizing the responses given, or debating with the AI. The main focus is on demeaning behavior that serves no purpose and is persistently continued.

Thus, while users dissatisfied with the AI's responses retain the right to criticize, the limits of interaction with the system are also reopened for debate.

Why is Anthropic Taking Such a Step?

Behind Anthropic's approach lie ongoing debates about whether artificial intelligence can possess consciousness. Rather than asserting that Claude has been proven conscious, the company raises the notion that this possibility cannot yet be definitively ruled out.

This stance causes the relationship established with artificial intelligence systems to be examined not only in its technical and functional dimensions but also in its ethical aspects. However, there is no definitive scientific consensus today on whether an artificial intelligence is conscious.

The Limits of Communication with AI Are Changing

Anthropic's approach brings new questions about the future of AI usage rules. While users' criticism of systems and questioning of their mistakes remain a fundamental need, defining what constitutes continuous bad treatment also becomes important.

At the heart of the debate is now not only how artificial intelligence responds to humans but also how humans communicate with AI.
