Argentina's 'golden passport' move: Citizenship for investors
Argentina is launching the 'golden passport' program, which foresees granting citizenship in exchange for investment to meet foreign exchange needs and attract foreign capital. Applications are planned to be accepted in the last quarter of 2026.

The South American country Argentina is implementing a citizenship‑by‑investment program to attract wealthy foreign investors to the nation.Gold passportThe program, called 'Gold passport', was announced at an investor event organized in Paris by Economy Minister Luis Caputo.
According to the Argentine government's statement, the program will open for applications in the fourth quarter of 2026. The initiative will be the first in South America to grant direct citizenship in exchange for investment.
Two Options Will Be Offered for Citizenship
Foreigners wishing to join the program will be offered two different investment options.
In the first option, a non‑repayable contribution of $350,000 must be made to the Argentine Treasury. In the second option, the purchase of a $800,000 state bond specially created for the program is foreseen. The bond is planned to be held for seven years.
An additional payment will also be required for family members to be included in the program. A contribution of $100,000 is foreseen for spouses and unmarried, child‑free individuals aged 18 to 25, and $25,000 for children under 18. It is noted that the total amount could reach $500,000 for a family of four.

Applicants Will Be Reviewed
Making an investment will not automatically grant citizenship. The applicants' identities, source of funds, financial situations, criminal records, and immigration histories will be examined.
The Argentine government announced that applications will be evaluated in accordance with standards for financial transparency and anti‑money‑laundering. After security and financial risk reviews, the final decision is expected to be made by the National Immigration Administration.
Purpose: Attract Foreign Capital to the Country
The government presents the program as part of its policies to open Argentina's economy further to international capital and strengthen the investment environment.
According to Reuters, the program is being implemented as part of President Javier Milei's administration's efforts to increase dollar reserves and encourage foreign investment.
Thus, Argentina will join the ranks of countries that grant citizenship in exchange for investment, becoming the first country in South America to implement this model.
