Critical period for West Nile virus! Experts warn: The number of cases could far exceed official figures

Paraskevi said that the true number of infections could be far above the figures recorded in official statistics due to mild cases.
Professor of Epidemiology Dimitris Paraskevi from the University of Athens made significant remarks about West Nile virus cases in Greece. Speaking to Greek State Television ERT, Paraskevi said that the period when virus cases were most intense was the end of August, and that cases could continue to be seen in September.
"End of August is the Most Dangerous Period"
Paraskevi stated that there was a seasonal increase in West Nile virus infection cases and that the most intense period coincided with the end of August.
The expert, who noted that cases were expected to continue in September, added that seasonal increases were more pronounced in warm climate regions.
Actual Case Numbers May Exceed Official Figures
Paraskevi, who said that a significant portion of West Nile virus infections were mild, said that this made determining the true number of cases difficult.
The expert, who reported that most complaints such as headache, fever, and fatigue appeared mild in patients, stated that a significant portion of these individuals did not seek medical care at health facilities.
It was pointed out that the number of people infected with the virus could be much higher than the cases recorded in official statistics.
Attention to Severe Symptoms
Paraskevi emphasized that mild symptoms alone may not indicate a serious situation, but certain symptoms should be taken especially seriously.
The expert, who noted that severe headache and loss of consciousness occurring alongside symptoms affecting the central nervous system could signal a serious condition, said that urgent medical assessment is required for such symptoms.
Older Adults at Greater Risk
It was noted that people of advanced age and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk, particularly regarding the severe course of West Nile virus.
Experts emphasize the importance of reducing mosquito exposure and taking necessary protective measures in late summer and early autumn.
