Pennsylvania Measles Alert: Two Deaths After 35 Years

In the United States, the Pennsylvania Department of Health announced that two deaths linked to measles had occurred in the state. The fatalities that took place in Lancaster County were the first measles‑related deaths recorded in Pennsylvania in the past 35 years. Officials said that neither of the deceased had been vaccinated against the virus.

Case Count Reaches 393

Across the state, a total of 393 confirmed measles cases have been identified in 29 counties so far in 2026. Measles cases nationwide have also reached the highest level in 35 years. Developments in Pennsylvania indicate that the outbreak continues to spread within the state borders.

Vaccination Warning from Health Officials

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Health Secretary Dr. Debra Bogen assessed the situation at a press conference held after the deaths. Bogen said that because measles had been largely eliminated in the state for more than three years, the public might not have sufficient knowledge about the disease’s nature and the potential consequences it could cause.

MMR Vaccine Provides Protection

Protection against measles is provided by the MMR vaccine, which is used against measles, mumps, and rubella. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the vaccine is usually administered to children in two doses. The first dose is given during the 12‑15‑month period, and the second dose between ages 4 and 6.

Cases Reported in Lehigh County

Developments related to the outbreak in Pennsylvania were not limited to Lancaster County alone. In August, two measles cases were also confirmed in Lehigh County. These cases showed that the disease continued to reappear in different parts of the state.

Vaccination Rate in Preschools Declines

According to the latest CDC data, 92.4% of children attending preschool in the U.S. during the 2025‑26 school year were vaccinated against measles. That rate was 95.2% in the 2019‑20 school year. Health officials say that a vaccination rate of roughly 95% is needed to maintain herd immunity.

New Debate in Vaccine Policy

President Donald Trump also signed an executive order in August proposing that the MMR vaccine be administered in three separate shots. While the measles outbreak was ongoing, two deaths and 393 confirmed cases in Pennsylvania made the disease once again a significant public health agenda item in the state.
