Turkish scientists are participating in NASA’s research on the first baby born in space
Dr. Begüm Mathyk, a Turkish scientist, is conducting research with NASA on women’s health and reproductive processes in space.
Associate Professor Begüm Aydoğan Mathyk, who is conducting research at the University of South Florida (USF) in the United States, is working on research with NASA and international space organizations regarding women’s health in space.
The studies focus on the sustainability of life and how reproductive processes will function in human settlements planned for the Moon and Mars in the future.
Within this scope, the effects of the space environment on women’s health and potential health risks that may arise during long-duration missions are examined.
Leading women’s health research
Mathyk, who serves as the Chair of the NASA OSDR Women’s Reproductive Analysis Working Group, is participating in various studies where women astronaut health data is evaluated.
The research addresses the effects of space missions on women’s reproductive health and potential health problems that may arise in future manned space missions.
Marked a first in medical history
Mathyk has marked a first in medical history by performing gynecological ultrasound examinations in a gravity-free space analog environment for the first time in the world.
It has been reported that the Turkish scientist previously conducted research on the women astronauts aboard the Inspiration4 mission and will also be involved in health studies of this year’s all-female space crew.
